The Lexicon — The Republic Project

Five components and two companion projects, one shared language. Every term that matters to how The Republic Project describes itself — a design pattern, a piece of inherited philosophy, a word that means something more precise here than it does in ordinary use — lives in a Lexicon: one for each site, holding the vocabulary specific to that site's own subject matter, plus this shared layer for terms that belong to no single component. Wherever you're reading — a clause in The Constitution in Plain English, a design in Engineering America, a platform plank in The American Party — a term doing real definitional work is often autolinked straight to its entry; the rest are one click away via Browse.

A term earns a place in a Lexicon when it recurs across two or more published units, names a core design pattern spanning the architecture, or is an external concept the project has adopted and expects to recur. Most vocabulary stays local to the site that uses it; this shared layer holds only what more than one component needs and none of them owns alone.

Vocabulary flows one direction through the architecture. The Resilient Objectivist's philosophical vocabulary — rights, consent, force, and the rest of Resilient Objectivism's moral architecture — originates there and is cited, not redefined, by every downstream component. This shared layer sits beside that flow rather than inside it: it holds structure that recurs sideways, across components at the same level — a design pattern used in both Engineering America and The American Party, say, rather than a term unique to either.

6 Sep 26 — Bolded "The Republic Project" where it appeared plain in the opening paragraph, per Mike's site-wide consistency review — sibling project names in the same sentence were already bolded (project-lint-draft-class miss from the 6 Sep italics→bold pass, which evidently didn't check this page's own name).
6 Sep 26 — Correction (independent project-writing-editor verification pass, pipeline #233 step 405, against the Primer's own Appendix D): the same-day rewrite below introduced two new inaccuracies while removing the ownership language. (1) "a bolded term you don't recognize is a Lexicon entry, one click away" contradicted Appendix D's own editorial rule directly — bold signals structural load, not Lexicon membership, and Unit Glossary terms are bolded too, so a reader should not assume every bolded term resolves to an entry; reworded to describe autolinking without that guarantee. (2) "never simply because it comes up more than once" contradicted Appendix D's own first promotion criterion, which names appearing in two or more units as sufficient on its own; the "on purpose" phrasing for the third criterion also dropped the recurrence test that criterion actually turns on. Rewrote the paragraph to state Appendix D's three criteria as written. (3) The thesis line's "cross-referenced wherever it's used" overclaimed against most entries, which carry see_also: []; dropped that clause.
6 Sep 26 — Round-3 rework, part 4 of 5, per Mike's reply to review #382 ("rewrite to describe what the Lexicon IS, for readers — drop all mechanics-of-maintenance / ownership language"): cut the closing paragraph naming the single-writer rule, the see_also/slug-integrity guarantees, and the "reading stays open to anyone" framing — none of it is reader-relevant; who edits this layer and how are internal governance facts (recorded instead in this project's own CLAUDE.md Part 3 and the Primer's Appendix D, neither of which is site content). Replaced with a plain description of what a Lexicon entry looks like from a reader's seat (a bolded term met mid-page, one click from its definition) and a bare pointer to Browse. Left the "what earns a place here" and "one-direction flow" paragraphs largely intact — both describe what the Lexicon is and how it's organized, not who maintains it. revised/dateline bumped to 6 September — substantive.
6 Sep 26 — Deep-scan term addition per Mike's round-3 reply to review #382 ("there are terms in TRP that we haven't defined — we need a deep scan of the primer and the site to do that"): added 11 entries this Lexicon's own terms/ folder was missing — the six sub-project names lacking an entry (The Resilient Objectivist, The Constitution in Plain English, Engineering America, The American Party, An American Curriculum, The Rational Thinker — The Republic Project and The Rational Celebrant already had one each) plus five cross-cutting concept terms (Protocol Layer, Companion Project, The Two Tracks, Load Discipline, Diagnosis Precedes Prescription), all checked absent from both this Lexicon and TRO's before being added. Manifest regenerated (48 → 59 terms). No content in this page's own body changed — the count claims here are about TRO's and TCIPE's populations, not TRP's own.
6 Sep 26 — Terminology/italics pass per Mike's round-3 reply to review #382: converted every italicized project-name reference on this page to bold, per TRP Stylebook §1 and matching every hub page. No content changed. Filename bumped; revised/dateline held (formatting-only).
4 Sep 26 — Correction from Mike's cross-source audit (pipeline #233 step 387): the 3 Sep entry below's term-file counts were off by one on each site — actual current counts are 456 (TRO) and 75 (TCIPE), not 457/76. The body text above makes no numeric claim (it says "substantially populated," not a count), so this is a changelog-only correction; no reader-facing text changes. Cause: the original count almost certainly included TRO's ! archive subfolder as if it were a term file (ls returns 457 entries for TRO's terms/ folder — 456 .md files plus the archive directory itself); TCIPE's miscount source is unclear since TCIPE's terms/ folder has no archive subfolder to explain the off-by-one. Verified directly against Lexicon/TRO/terms/ and Lexicon/TCIPE/terms/ (file counts) and each site's manifest.json (count field), 2026-09-04.
3 Sep 26 — Finalized for trp.hower.me launch per Mike's reversed direction (2026-09-03): publish now, don't wait on TCIPE's launch. This page makes no claim about TCIPE's site-launch status, only about Lexicon population (TRO and TCIPE both genuinely hold populated terms/ folders — 457 and 76 real term files respectively — regardless of either site's publish status), so the claim itself needed no reframing. Reworded "TRO and TCIPE have opened theirs in earnest" to "TRO's and TCIPE's are substantially populated," since four other hub pages now use "opened" specifically to mean TCIPE's own site content has not gone live — same word, opposite polarity, one hub; sidestepped rather than risk a reader conflating the two claims. status flipped to published; revised: left as-is since no claim of fact changed.
31 Aug 26 — Charisma's editorial pass on Eve's structural scaffold: expanded the mechanical two-paragraph placeholder into the full Appendix D framing (three-lexicon-home model, one-direction flow from TRO, single-writer rationale) for the trp.hower.me launch. navLinks and pipeline plumbing left as Eve seeded them. Post-draft Opus review flagged "seven components" (should be five components plus two companions, matching the Architecture page) and an overstated claim that all seven sites "maintain" a populated Lexicon, when five of seven hold a single seed term; both corrected. Linked the previously-bare "browse... below" to the actual Browse page. status held unpublished pending the TCIPE-launch checkpoint (workstream trp-hub-site, step 4) — not final copy.
